Kerin Black
Alexander Technique Teacher London
Member of the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique (STAT)
In addition to offering private AT lessons and workshops as a certified Alexander Technique practitioner, I am currently on the faculty at the Royal Academy of Music.
In 2002 I completed my 3-year full-time studies as an Alexander Technique Teacher with Robin Simmons at Hampstead Alexander Centre. Since then I have been teaching around the world as a certified Alexander Technique practitioner, primarily in Germany, where I lived from 2004 until 2020, and also in England, South Africa, the USA and Switzerland.
From 2016 to 2020 I founded and was Director of Training of my own formally-recognised school in Stuttgart, the South German Alexander Technique Centre (SATZ). Prior to that I was the Assistant Director of Training at the Alexander Technique Teacher Training Centre in Zurich (ATLAZ) for five years. After 18 years abroad, I relinquished my school in order to move back to London in 2020.
My first experiences with the Alexander Technique (AT) took place at the age of 15 at Interlochen Arts Camp in the USA. During my horn studies at the Royal Academy of Music I was fortunate to be able to continue having lessons throughout my time there. Directly after graduation, I began my Alexander Technique teacher training.
Alexander Technique Teacher & Practitioner in London and Abroad
In addition to training Alexander Technique teachers for nearly 10 years at the ATLAZ in Zurich and the SATZ in Stuttgart, I have maintained a thriving private studio throughout. I have also designed and delivered professional development workshops for AT teachers at international congresses and meetings. I relinquished my school in order to move back to London in 2020 after 18 years abroad.
I have much experience teaching individuals and groups from all walks of life, all of whom have many different reasons for learning.
Areas of Work – Alexander Teacher London
In particular, my work with musicians of all levels inspires me, having the first-hand experience of just how life-changing it can be. My work as an Alexander Technique teacher in London and abroad with musicians has included workshops for the Royal Academy of Music and the International Horn Symposium in London, Texas State University and Interlochen Arts Academy in the USA, and Leuphana University and the Musikschule im Schloss in Germany, amongst others. I also founded and ran an Alexander Technique programme at Kingston Grammar School as part of the music department until 2003.
Another field of expertise as an Alexander Technique teacher is my work with horse riders. My AT workshops and lessons for riders, including preparation for teacher qualification exams, have played a central role in my work for many years. I offer workshops at riding centres and private lessons with or without a horse specifically for riders.
A hobby I am passionate about is playing golf. One of the many fascinating things about golf is that my own application of the Alexander Technique produces direct results with every swing. The mental side of the game shares many parallels with the Alexander Technique, and golf provides me with a tangible challenge to maintain my so-called directions and thinking, in order to produce a satisfying result on the round. For that reason, working with golfers is obviously another area of particular interest for me.
In addition to being a certified Alexander Technique practitioner, I am also a professional French horn player, having graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in 1999, and a certified Holistic Yoga Instructor (Sivananda / 500-hour training from Yoga Vidya e.V.).
